How to Know If You Have a Disc Herniation

Discs are rubbery gel-filled shock absorbers that help maintain the flexibility of the back. If you are concerned about experiencing symptoms of a disc herniation, it is advisable to visit your chiropractor for a diagnosis. At Skocik Chiropractic in Harrisburg, our chiropractor can determine whether the problem is indeed a herniation or something else.

Self-Diagnosis

If you feel the need to take a proactive approach to your diagnosis, there are a few things you can try at home to get an idea of what might be wrong with your back. After performing a self-diagnosis, it is crucial to make an appointment as soon as possible with Dr. Skocik to discuss the most suitable treatment options for you.

Straight Leg Raise

This test is easy to perform, although having a partner may be helpful. Lie flat on the floor and use a pillow to elevate your head. If you experience pain in one leg, that is the leg you should use for this test. Keep your leg straight, point your toes, and slowly raise your leg. If you have a herniated disc, you may feel pain at some point. Ask your partner to gently push your toe toward your head. If you feel pain during this maneuver, it is possible that you have a herniated disc.

Walking on Heels

Attempt to walk on your heels. Even with a herniated disc, you should be able to stand on your heels, but moving your legs while walking in this manner will likely be difficult and painful. Alternatively, you can try walking on your toes if that feels better for you.

Sitting Test

Sit on a chair with your back in a slumped position. Raise one leg and pull your toes toward your body. If you experience pain, there is a good chance that you have a disc-related issue.
