Understanding Sciatica: How Chiropractic Care Can Help

When sciatic pain strikes, you deserve immediate relief. Unfortunately, medication alone is not enough to manage sciatica and back pain. While drugs can provide temporarily relief, they do so by numbing the brain’s ability to process pain signals. Once the medication wears off, the pain returns. Rather than treating the symptoms for your pain, our chiropractor believes that the best way to address pain is to go straight to the source.
Sciatic Pain Relief: Our Chiropractor Answers Your Questions
Are you a good candidate for chiropractic adjustments? If you suffer from chronic sciatic pain, you could be. Here’s what you need to know:
What cause sciatica?
Sciatica is caused by a misalignment in the lumbar spine. For many patients, a slip and fall, a sports injury, or even a car accident injury my trigger this misalignment. When this misalignment occurs, a slipped or herniated disc may compress nearby nerves. If this disc compresses the sciatic nerve, you will experience a radiating or numbing pain sensation. This compression is what causes pain in your lower back, as well as the buttocks and legs.
How do chiropractic adjustments treat sciatica?
Chiropractic care is an effective treatment because it addresses the underlying cause for sciatica pain. Rather than simply numbing pain signals (like medication does), adjustments help to bring proper alignment back to the spine. By restoring proper alignment, adjustments relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve. Doing so, in turn, stops the radiating and numbing pain sensations from running up and down the nerve. You will experience less pain without the daily need for medication.
