Sitting for eight hours a day can damage your spine, causing severe back pain. Here at Skocik Chiropractic, we would like to remind you to utilize proper posture and take frequent breaks during your office work day to reduce your chances of damaging your spine.
Hazards of Sitting at Your Desk all DaySitting at your desk all day can cause significant trauma to your spine. When you sit, your pelvis tilts towards the back of your chair. Your lower back curves backwards or concave, and your upper spine curves forward. In this position, your shoulders hover above your thighs instead of your hips. Your head and neck extend even further over your thighs, which puts pressure on your cervical discs. This causes your upper back muscles to work harder and can contribute to severe back pain as well as tension headaches.
As you spend additional time in this position, your lower back will start to lose its natural curve. This can result in loss of range of motion and chronic back pain.
To slow this process, we recommend utilizing proper posture while you sit. Your shoulders should be positioned above your hips. Your computer monitor should be at a height that easily allows you to see the screen without tilting your head up or down, and your feet should rest flat on the floor.
Our chiropractor in Harrisburg can help you reduce your lower back pain through chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy and nutrition guidance. Manual or chiropractic adjustments can help restore the proper curvature of your spine, which reduces pain and inflammation. Massage therapy promotes circulation and healing, while loosening tight muscles to restore flexibility.
Our nutrition services can help you improve your diet by maximizing the amounts of whole grains, fruits and vegetables you eat on a daily basis. When your body is receiving proper nutrition, it heals faster.
