Chiropractic spinal decompression therapy helps increase the spaces between the discs. Nonsurgical spinal decompression is performed on a decompression table. The table consists of movable sections, cables, pulleys and weights. Treatments are controlled by sensors and a computer. The chiropractor sets the table in order to target specific sets of vertebrae. Some tables can even decompress the vertebrae in the neck. Once the table is set, the individual receiving treatment is connected to the pulley system via a belt.

The treatment parameters are input into the computer and the decompression session is started. The table then applies a specific force to the patient to gently increase the spaces between the discs. Individual treatment lengths vary between 30 and 45 minutes. Most patients find the sessions relaxing, and there are virtually no side-effects. However, some patients may feel slightly sore afterwards.
