What is Small Fiber Neuropathy?

What is Small Fiber Neuropathy?

chiropractor explaining small fiber neuropathy to patient in Harrisburg, PA

Small fiber neuropathy is a nuanced and often challenging health condition faced by many Americans.

What is small fiber neuropathy?

Small fiber neuropathy is a disease that causes nerve damage to the small nerve fibers innervating the skin and other organs. People with diabetes are most likely to have small fiber neuropathy, although other health conditions, including Lyme disease, celiac disease, chronic nutritional deficiency, hypothyroidism and HIV, have also been associated with this type of nerve damage. Often, the exact cause is unknown.

What are the symptoms of small fiber neuropathy?

Symptoms vary from person to person, and depend on the severity of nerve fiber breakdown. Small fiber neuropathy typically affects the hands and feet first, and as the disease progresses, other areas of the body can be affected.

Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Numbness, tingling, burning, and other abnormal sensations (often worse at night)

  • Decreased sensation, including impaired ability to sense pain, temperature, and touch

  • Feeling pain from things that typically do not cause pain, such as a person's own clothing

  • Sudden dizziness upon standing (orthostatic hypotension)

  • Abnormal heart beats (palpitations)

  • Dry mouth and eyes

  • Excessive sweating
