Herniated Discs from our Harrisburg Chiropractor

Dr. Albert Skocik, our Harrisburg chiropractor, delivers effective treatments for herniated discs. The health team at Skocik Chiropractic understand that when you have more knowledge surrounding your health, you are more likely to heal and make progress. You may hear the term herniated disc, but still have questions as to what this is or how it happened. Dr. Skocik wants to arm you with as much information as possible while we show you how chiropractic care for herniated discs delivers a natural and holistic healing approach.

Herniated Discs

Causes of Herniated Discs

A disc sits between the vertebrae of your spine. It provides cushioning for your movements to allow your spine to bend, rotate and stretch without the bony vertebrae interfering with the nerves. If the disc herniates or bulges, it has slipped out of its space between the vertebrae and is pressing on the nerves. As a result, you may feel back pain, limited mobility or arm or leg tingling, numbness or weakness depending on the location of the herniated disc.

Now that you understand a herniated disc, you still wonder how this happened. Herniated discs may be caused by a variety of factors including:

  • Wear and tear- a herniated disc may be caused by the aging process. As the body ages, the discs become more brittle which can lead to a herniated or bulging disc.
  • Excess weight- carrying extra weight around your mid-section may strain the discs.
  • Improper lifting techniques- lifting a heavy object or repeatedly performing heavy lifting may strain the discs.
  • Accident- although rare, an auto accident or personal injury may herniate a disc.
  • Genetics- thank your parents for a pre-disposition to herniated discs, but know that chiropractic care can ease your discomfort and return the disc to its proper place.
