What is Scoliosis?

Hand pointing to a spine

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. While it usually appears during childhood, it can also develop in adults. Although there is no cure for scoliosis, treatment from a chiropractor can greatly improve the quality of your life. At Skocik Chiropractic, we have been sharing the benefits of chiropractic care with Harrisburg residents for many years. Many of our patients visit us for the first time looking for scoliosis pain management.

What Causes Scoliosis?

The cause of scoliosis is unknown. It does tend to run in families. Young people with illnesses like cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy tend to get it. Birth defects of the spine can also cause scoliosis.

Symptoms of Scoliosis

The shoulders do not align, with one being higher than the other. Shoulder blades, hips, and rib cages will also be higher on one side than the other. Back pain, stiffness, and tightness are common. Over time, numbness and weakness develop in some parts of the body.

Does Scoliosis Go Away by Itself?

No. However, chiropractic care will help relieve the symptoms of scoliosis. By restoring your spine’s natural alignment, our chiropractor will relieve your pain, restore your range of motion, and enhance your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Does Scoliosis Cause Complications?

Scoliosis can cause major medical complications, such as making it hard for a person to breathe. It also causes constant back pain. Our chiropractor will assess your musculoskeletal system to determine whether or not your pain and immobility are due to scoliosis before creating a chiropractic care plan to relieve your symptoms.

Scoliosis Treatment

In children, mild cases of scoliosis can be treated with braces, which helps keep the spine properly aligned as the child grows. Treatment for adults with fully developed bones is more difficult. Severe cases need surgery. Scoliosis pain management often starts with losing weight to keep strain off of misaligned parts of the body.

Alternative Care for Scoliosis

Acupuncture is an effective and drug-free form of scoliosis pain management. Chiropractic care, while not being able to straighten a curved spine, can help relieve pain and promote relaxation. This helps to lessen anxiety, promote better sleep, and helps give energy for exercise. Massage therapy is also effective in relieving pain, promoting relaxation, and improving circulation throughout the body.
