Dr. Skocik Answers Massage Questions
Here at Skocik Chiropractic, we offer massage therapy for our Harrisburg, Hershey, Progress, Colonial Park, Lower Paxton, and Grantville, PA chiropractic patients. Here are some of the common questions we receive about this natural healing practice.
What kind of massage is right for me?
Our chiropractor may recommend any of several different forms of massage. Light or "Swedish" massage is good for increasing circulation and relieving tension near the skin surface, while deep tissue massage is better for releasing stubborn muscle knots and acupressure focuses on alleviating nerve problems.
Does massage therapy hurt?
Massage's ability to relax muscles can provide significant relief from existing aches and pains. Some of the more intense massage techniques, such as deep tissue work, can cause mild temporary discomfort. But we always work within your tolerances, modifying the treatment sessions as needed to accommodate you.
How does massage therapy relieve back, neck pain and headaches?
Massage can have a profoundly relaxing effect on the body, and many of the common varieties of neck pain, back pain, headaches and other pain disorders we experience are related to muscle tension. By loosening the muscles, massage reduces the production of inflammatory wastes caused by chronic muscle tension. The increase in blood flow to the muscles also allows accumulated inflammatory substances to be expelled from the muscles, relieving pain.
Can massage therapy treat neuropathy?
Neuropathy, a malfunction of the nerves that most frequently affects hands and feet (when it is known as peripheral neuropathy), can cause numbness, "pins and needles" sensations and/or weakness. Acupressure, a form of massage in which pressure is applied to precise points on the body, triggers the release of natural opioid painkillers to relieve pain associated with neuropathy. A particular form of acupressure called reflexology is particularly useful for treating neuropathy in the lower body.
Why do you prescribe massage therapy for injuries?
Massage can perform several important tasks in helping you recover from a sports, work, or auto accident injury. In addition to relieving pain and inflammation, massage also helps prevent the creation of adhesions -- lumps of scar tissue that make full motion painful or impossible. The boost in circulation also helps push more nutrients into your injured tissues so they can heal themselves more efficiently.
Is massage safe during pregnancy?
Massage is both safe and extremely helpful for relieving the discomforts created as the body changes dramatically during pregnancy. Massage can help you experience less lower back pain, neck pain, headaches, hormonal issues, and swelling of the hands and feet (edema). Of course we are extremely gentle with our pregnant patients, while delivering important benefits to help them sleep better, feel better, and ensure optimal health for mother and baby alike.
